King’s School under-15s rugby team are celebrating success in beating Stamford School to reach the last 32 of the Daily Mail Cup.

The national competition, with more than 500 entrants, is open to all rugby playing schools. It begins with a regional knockout followed by the quarter-finals onwards, drawn from the regional winners, with the final held at Twickenham each year.

This achievement is the latest in a long line of success for the boys who have been playing together at King’s for the last three years, and remain unbeaten over that period. Their latest match saw them defeat Wisbech Grammar 55-5, and their next game is away at Leicester Grammar.

The team, along with the under-16s, are planning a tour to South Africa in July next year, where they will play six matches over a 17 day period. They are pictured in a fundraising photograph to be used for Christmas cards for team members and their families.

Other fundraising activities are planned over the next few months, including bag packing at local supermarkets, starting at Sainsbury’s tomorrow (Saturday, December 8), and selling raffle tickets for their Christmas hamper draw.

The team are also seeking local businesses to act as tour sponsors, to help cover the cost of playing kit and tour uniforms. Anyone interested in providing sponsorship should contact the fundraising manager Gavin Hubbard (ghubbard@learndirect.co.uk) or the school office on 01476 563180.
