GRANTHAM Town warmed up for their weekend league game against Romulus with a 4-0 victory over Lincoln Moorlands at The Meres this evening (Jan 4).

The Gingerbreads struggled somewhat in the first half, kicking into a fierce wind but their opponents could not make use of the favourable conditions to break the deadlock.

Moorlands changed almost their entire team at half-time and were second best throughout the second 45 minutes.

Grantham took the lead on 55 minutes when Moorlands made a complete hash of a simple throw-in.

The Lincoln full-back attempted to find his goalkeeper, only for Town striker Joe Briers to get their first, knocking the ball past the goalkeeper before finishing.

Grantham went two ahead on 80 minutes when a Moorlands goal kick was headed straight back where it came from. Paul Grimes was quickest to react, reaching the ball before the goalkeeper to leave himself a simple finish.

Town made it three on 82 minutes with the goal of the game. The impressive Sam Purcicoe dribbled inside before playing a perfect through-ball for target man Tony Battersby.

With the goalkeeper rushing out, the big man showed a deft touch to scoop the ball over the stopper’s head and into the back of the net.

With two minutes of normal time remaining, Grantham grabbed their fourth with a well worked team goal.

Purcicoe was again involved, working the ball down the left before finding Battersby. The striker held off two challenges before rolling it back to Grimes on the edge of the box. His strike was perfect, nestling in the bottom corner of the net.

Table-topping Grantham Town face Romulus at The Meres on Saturday.
