BOXING: Welterweight Terry Bennett punches way to victory

GRANTHAM welterweight Terry Bennett recorded an excellent points victory over Yorkshireman Paul Scaife in Barnsely.

Bennett took the fight to the Millenium Boxing Club fighter from the opening bell. The Grantham fighter made a great start to the bout, using his impressive left jab to spark combinations to comfortably win the opening round.

In the second Bennett picked up where he left off, pushing his opponent back and rocking the Yorkshireman with solid right hands. But Scaife refused to give up and came back strongly towards the end of the round.

Scaife continued to raise the pace in the third, pushing the Grantham boxer to the limit but at the end of the three rounds Bennett was given a unanimous decision, showing a little too much skill and combination punching for his opponent.

l Grantham ABC heavyweight Carl Fletcher made his debut for the club at the Triumph Social Club in Coventry, turning in a fine display.

Fletcher made a confident start, taking the fight to his opponent, Darren Ferguson of Triumph ABC, with some nice jabbing and neat combinations which earned him the opener.

The Grantham boxer started the second round well and rocked Ferguson with a right hand punch. But the bout was far from over for the Coventry boxer and Fletcher let him come back into the bout.

During the third round Fletcher failed to defend and kept walking onto the Coventry boxers jab. Although Fletcher once again came back the stronger of the two boxers, by the end of the third the judges awarded the bout in favour of Ferguson.

Grantham ABC coach Dean Fardell said: “It was a fine display of boxing by Fletcher in his first bout for the club.”

l Featherweight Connor McCready competed for Grantham ABC for the first time since moving to the area from Sunderland.

McCready fought Leicester Railway Mens’ Club’s Brady Lingard and began the fight well, establishing himself with some nice left and right combination punches.

The Leicester man was put onto the back-foot but unfortunately McCready allowed his opponent back into the fight. The Grantham fighter finished the three-round bout the stronger but the judges gave the decision to Lingard.

Dean Fardell of grantham ABC said: “Our lads are doing well despite the points loses. We just need to work on their defence a little more but they are working very hard to improve.”
